Freight Tool

Chargeable Weight Calculator

This tool calculates chargeable weight on two bases — switch between the air freight basis (actual weight vs. volumetric weight, with an adjustable volumetric factor) and the sea LCL W/M basis (CBM vs. weight in tonnes). It shows the chargeable figure (the higher of the two) for whichever basis you select.

Air basis: chargeable weight is the higher of actual weight and volumetric weight, in kg.

Estimate only

This result is a planning estimate, not the final chargeable weight your airline or carrier will bill. Volumetric factors and rounding rules vary by carrier — always confirm with TGF or the carrier before relying on it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is chargeable weight?

Chargeable weight is whichever is higher: the actual (scale) weight of your cargo, or its volumetric weight (a weight equivalent based on the space it occupies). Carriers bill based on this figure.

Is the sea LCL basis the same calculation as air freight?

No — they're different bases. Air freight compares actual weight (kg) against volumetric weight (kg) using a volumetric factor. Sea LCL instead uses the W/M (weight/measurement, or revenue-ton) basis: it compares your shipment's volume in CBM against its weight in tonnes (1 CBM is conventionally treated as 1000kg), and bills on whichever is higher. Use the toggle above to switch between the two.

Why does the volumetric factor matter?

A lower factor produces a higher volumetric weight (and vice versa), so the exact figure a carrier uses can materially change the chargeable weight. Factors commonly cited include 6000 (general air cargo) or 5000 for some lanes — always confirm with the specific carrier.

Is this the exact weight my airline will bill?

No — this is an estimate for planning purposes. Airlines and forwarders apply their own rounding rules, minimums and volumetric factors, so the figure on your final airway bill may differ. Confirm with TGF or the carrier before relying on this number.
